Um die Relevanz des Fußballs als Propagandamittel zu ermitteln soll deshalb zu Beginn die Rolle des activities in der Gesellschaft und für die Nationalsozialisten erörtert werden, anschließend erklärt werden warum der Fußball derart Instrumentalisiert werden konnte, wie er es wurde. Anschließend soll der Begriff Propaganda definiert werden um dann konkreter auf die zuerst innerdeutschen und dann auf die internationalen Maßnahmen eingehen zu können. Hierbei wird vor allem durch konkrete Beispiele argumentiert, da abgeschlossene Geschichte und die konkreten Mittel der Propaganda sich meist in einzelnen Aktionen auf die damaligen konkreten situativen Umstände äußern. Auf Grund der Relevanz der Medien werden deshalb auch einzelne Medien als Transportmittel der Propaganda näher beleuchtet. Abschließend wird am Beispiel des FC Gelsenkirchen-Schalke 04 ein Fußballverein näher auf die Einbindung für propagandistische Zwecke untersucht.
Viele Quellen liefern zwar wichtige ergänzende Hinweise, sehen die Einbindung des Fußballs aber oft monokausal, während nach aktuellem Forschungsstand hauptsächlich das Zusammenspiel einzelner individueller Interessen, gesellschaftlicher Notwendigkeiten, ökonomischer Vorteile und nationalsozialistischer Propaganda ausschlaggebend für die tatsächlich ereignete Geschichte gesehen wird.
